Clear Comprehension of Purpose: Choosing to Embody Your Highest Values

In his research on happiness, Martin Seligman, the father of Positive Psychology, discovered that the greatest fulfillment comes from identifying our strengths and offering them to others in a spirit of contribution. Shantideva, the author of The Guide to the Bodhisattva’s Way of Life, similarly said that the miracle of awakening “lifts us above poverty into the wealth of giving to life."

With so much sorrow and suffering in the world, what does a spirit of contribution look like at this time? It’s easy to respond with despair and negativity. However, embodying kindness and compassion is not only more uplifting for ourselves; it also helps awaken those qualities in others. We affect and are affected by those around us. How does it feel to be in the company of people who are stuck in complaining, worry or hopelessness? Compare that to being with those whose commitment is to bringing out the best in others. Our own caring heart touches and inspires others.

A Buddhist teaching encourages us to develop “Clear Comprehension of Purpose.” Having a clear intention to act in accordance with our highest values can be a north star that governs all of our actions. With clarity of purpose, our practice can be an on-going reflection to help us face in the direction of greater happiness and well-being. “Why am I doing what I’m doing? Is it aligned with my highest purpose? Is it just for my satisfaction or does it help me grow? Will it also be for the benefit of others?”

Whether deepening our understanding or expressing our kindness and care, if our words and actions are aligned with our highest purpose, we experience an inner feeling of ease and wholeness. Besides feeling good inside, this also has a rippling effect that touches those around us. You might consider getting in touch with your Clear Comprehension of Purpose. Not just for your own well-being but for everyone you meet.
